In Memoriam: Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran

Telegram of Pope Francis on the death of Cardinal Tauran:

Holy Father’s telegram of condolences for the death of Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, 06.07.2018

The following is the telegram of condolences for the death yesterday in Hartford, in the United States of America, of His Eminence Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, of the Title of Sant’Apollinare alle Terme Neroniane-Alessandrine (diaconate elevated pro hac vice to presbyteral Title), Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, sent by the Holy Father Francis to his sister, Ms. Geneviève Dubert:

 Telegram of the Holy Father

Madame Geneviève DUBERT

Having learned with sadness the death of your brother, His Eminence Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, I wish to express my condolences and my union in prayer with the members of your family and all those in mourning. Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, whom I entrust to God’s mercy, has profoundly marked the life of the universal Church. He joined the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See and was able, inter alia, to serve as Secretary for Relations with States. Appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as head of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, he was an advisor who was listened to and appreciated, especially due to the relations of trust and esteem he knew how to build with the Muslim world. Because of his sense of service and his love for the Church, I appointed him Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church. I have fond memories of this man of profound faith who courageously served Christ’s Church to the end, despite the burden of ill-health. May the Lord welcome His servant in His peace and endless joy. As a pledge of comfort, I send my Apostolic Blessing to you, Madam, and to all your family, the College of Cardinals, and all the relatives of the deceased Cardinal, pastors and faithful of the archdiocese of Bordeaux, and all those who will take part in the funeral celebration."

Homily at the Funeral Mass for Cardinal Tauran

In the wake of the Gospel

    Homily of  Card. Angelo Sodano,

Dean of the College of Cardinals,

at the Funeral Mass for the late

    Card. Jean-Louis Tauran

(St Peters Basilica in the Vatican, 12 July 2018)

Dear Concelebrants, Distinguished Authorities and Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Family and Friends of Our Dear Deceased!

With deep emotion we are gathered around the altar of the Lord, to bid farewell to our unforgettable Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran and to entrust him into the merciful hands of the Father who is in heaven.

We are numerous here today because of the different bonds that unite us to this late Pastor, whose name will always live as a blessing among us. At the end of this Eucharistic celebration, the Holy Father will impart the final Blessing on the body of the Cardinal, who was already remembered by him in moving words in the telegram sent to his sister on his death.

Personally, I also keep a grateful memory of this Brother of deep faith, who courageously served the Holy Church of Christ up to the end, despite the heavy weight of his illness. May the Lord welcome this faithful servant into the glory of Paradise!

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, the readings of this funeral Mass have reminded us of some characteristic messages of the Word of God, which can comfort us in this hour of trial.

In the first reading, it is the Apostle St. John who enlightens us saying: "Blessed are those who die in the Lord. Yes - says the Spirit - they will rest from their labors, because their works follow them (Ap 14,13).

Then in the Responsorial Psalm the Church proposes we repeat the famous prayer of the "De profundis":

"Out of the depths I cry to You O Lord,

    Lord, listen to my voice.

    Let your ears be attentive

to the voice of my supplication ... "

In the second reading, St. Paul then invites us not to be discouraged by the trials of life, because the Lord is always beside us. " Therefore, we are not discouraged," St. Paul tells us, "rather, although our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. " (2 Corinthians 4:16).

Finally, in the Gospel, Jesus reminds us of the true Beatitudes of the Christian. It is always moving to hear them proclaimed in our churches: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, - blessed are the meek, - blessed are the merciful, - blessed are the pure in heart, - blessed are the peacemakers!"

These Beatitudes always illuminated the life of our dear deceased Brother, like bright stars in his path.

It was therefore right for us to be many here today, to thank the Lord for giving him to us, repeating the well-known prayer: "Lord, we do not complain because you took him away, rather we thank you for having given him to us!"

I personally witnessed his great apostolic spirit in the long years of common service to the Holy See and I will always have a grateful memory of him.

It is the memory of a great figure of a priest, Bishop and Cardinal, who dedicated his life to the service of the Church and to dialogue with all men of good will.

In this way, the late Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran followed the line drawn by the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, which in the Constitution "Gaudium et Spes" on the Church in the contemporary world, told us: "Since God the Father is the origin and purpose of all men, we are all called to be brothers. Therefore, if we have been summoned to the same destiny, human and divine, we can and we should work together without violence and deceit in order to build up the world in genuine peace. "(Constitution" Gaudium et Spes", No. 92). It was in this very manner that our dear, late Cardinal worked.

May the Lord now grant him his eternal reward!

MESSAGE FOR MAHAVIR JANMA KALYANAK DIWAS 2017

Christians and Jains: Together to foster practice of non-violence in families

Dear Jain Friends,

The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue sends you its warmest felicitations as you celebrate the 2615th Birth Anniversary of Tirthankar Vardhaman Mahavir on 9th April, this year. May this festive event bring happiness and peace in your hearts, families and communities!

Violence, with its many and varied forms, has become a major concern in most parts of the world. So, we wish to share with you on this occasion a reflection on how we, both Christians and Jains, can foster non-violence in families to nurture peace in society.

Causes of violence are as complex and diverse as its manifestations. Not so infrequently, violence stems from unhealthy upbringings and dangerous indoctrinations. Today, in the face of growing violence in society, it is necessary that families become effective schools of civilization and make every effort to nurture the value of non-violence.

Non-violence is the concrete application in one’s life of the golden rule: ‘Do to others as you would like others do unto you’. It entails that we respect and treat the other, including the ‘different other’, as a person endowed with inherent human dignity and inalienable rights. Avoidance of harm to anyone in any way is, therefore, a corollary to our way of being and living as humans.

Unfortunately, refusal by some to accept the ‘other’ in general and the ‘different other’ in particular, mostly due to fear, ignorance, mistrust or sense of superiority, has generated an atmosphere of widespread intolerance and violence. This situation can be overcome “by countering it with more love, with more goodness.” (Pope Benedict XVI, Angelus, 18 February, 2008).

This ‘more’ requires a grace from above, so also a place to cultivate love and goodness. Family is a prime place where a counter culture of peace and non-violence can find a fertile soil. It is here the children, led by the example of parents and elders, according to Pope Francis, “learn to communicate and to show concern for one another, and in which frictions and even conflicts have to be resolved not by force but by dialogue, respect, concern for the good of the other, mercy and forgiveness” (cf. Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, 2016, nos.90-130). Only with persons of non-violence as members, can families greatly contribute to making non-violence truly a way of life in the society.

Both our religions give primacy to a life of love and non-violence. Jesus taught his followers to love even their enemies (cf. Lk 6:27) and by His eminent example of life inspired them to do likewise. Thus, for us Christians, “non-violence is not merely a tactical behaviour but a person’s way of being” (Pope Benedict XVI, Angelus, 18 February, 2008) based on love and truth. ‘Ahimsa’ for you Jains is the sheet-anchor of your religion - ‘Ahimsa paramo dharmah’ (non-violence is the supreme virtue or religion).

As believers rooted in our own religious convictions and as persons with shared values and with the sense of co-responsibility for the human family, may we, joining other believers and people of good will, do all that we can, individually and collectively, to shape families into ‘nurseries’ of non-violence to build a humanity that cares for our common home and all its inhabitants!

Wish you all a happy feast of Mahavir Janma Kalyanak!

Jean-Louis Cardinal Tauran
