World Jewish Congress and Jewish Council of the Emirates celebrate first-ever International Day of Human Fraternity

Reflection

NEW YORK—World Jewish Congress (WJC) President Ronald S. Lauder and Jewish Council of the Emirates (JCE) President Ross Kriel join global leaders in marking the inaugural International Day of Human Fraternity, designated by the United Nations as February 4. Commenting on the significance of the occasion, WJC President Ronald S. Lauder said, “The International Day of Human Fraternity embodies the hope for the future that lies ahead, where there is more love than hate, more peace than war, more brotherhood and sisterhood than sectarian strife. The Document on Human Fraternity, signed by Pope Francis and Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb, under the patronage of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, sounded a courageous call for active coexistence.” Lauder continued, “Relationships between peoples, especially faith communities, require bold gestures that foster trust over time. These relationships must be cultivated and nurtured by our leaders and institutions. International Day of Human Fraternity, prompted by brave steps taken in Abu Dhabi, is the latest stop on the present path to peace. The World Jewish Congress joins with all people celebrating this advancement.” The Jewish Council of the Emirates, the recognized representative body approved by the Jews of the United Arab Emirates and affiliate community of the World Jewish Congress, added festive remarks from Dubai. Ross Kriel, President of the JCE, stated that, “We make common cause with all faith communities that view the International Day of Human Fraternity as a call to action and who share the inspiration we feel as Jewish residents of the UAE in building a widely held conviction of our common humanity and mutual responsibility.” Rabbi Elie Abadie, Senior Rabbi of the JCE, said, “I join all people of goodwill and the multicultural and multi-religious communities in the UAE in celebrating the International Day of Human Fraternity. All as children of God, we experience living with tolerance, peaceful coexistence and harmony here in the UAE. We are all bequeathing a more promising future to the next generations.” The United Nations proclaimed February 4 as the International Day of Human Fraternity following a meeting between Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmad al-Tayeb, on February 4, 2019, in Abu Dhabi, which resulted in the signing of the document entitled “Human fraternity for world peace and living together.” Lauder endorsed the Document on Human Fraternity in a keynote address in November 2019 at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, heralding it as a “defining international document” that deserves the respect of world Jewry. Calling for unity to fight hatred and racism, Lauder said, “human fraternity should always guide our actions. The concept of human fraternity has immediate implications for our world and our time.”

Bishop Alan McGuckian SJ welcomes the First International Day of Human Fraternity

Reflection

Bishop Alan McGuckian, Chair of the Irish Bishops' Council for Justice and Peace, has welcomed the First International Day of Human Fraternity, saying: “The Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together shows us clearly that there is more that unites us all as human beings, and as believers in God, than that which is too readily focused on as cause for division. This Document, alongside the most recent Papal Encyclical, Fratelli Tutti, which takes up and develops some of the great themes raised in the Document, highlights the common bonds of humanity that unite us, and the challenges that face us all, including ongoing injustice in the world, poverty, extremism and environmental degradation. In the face of these challenges, Pope Francis in Fratelli Tutti points repeatedly to the Good Samaritan as the guide for our own actions towards others. The Good Samaritan became a true neighbour to the wounded Judean by not passing by, too preoccupied with his own affairs, but by approaching and making himself present. In so doing he crosses all cultural, religious and historical barriers to care for his fellow man. Jesus concludes the parable by saying simply: “Go and do likewise” (Lk 10:37). Pope Francis explains: ‘In other words, he challenges us to put aside all differences and, in the face of suffering, to draw near to others with no questions asked. I should no longer say that I have neighbours to help, but that I must myself be a neighbour to others.’[1] On this day I hope that we will reflect on this passage and increase our efforts toward inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue, the promotion of a culture of tolerance and acceptance of others and of living together peacefully which ‘would contribute significantly to reducing many economic, social, political and environmental problems that weigh so heavily on a large part of humanity’. Article: THE POPE OF ROME, THE GRAND IMAM OF CAIRO, AND THE OFFICIAL WORLD DAY OF FRATERNITY

Reflection

reposted from www.igNation.ca - the blog of the Canadian Jesuits: 4 February has entered the world’s calendar of significant commemorations. On that day in 2019, during his apostolic journey to the United Arab Emirates, Pope Francis co-signed the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together along with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar (Cairo), Ahmad Al-Tayyeb. This Document raises the great themes which, 20 months later, would be taken up and developed in the Encyclical Fratelli tutti. MESSAGE FOR MAHAVIR JANMA KALYANAK DIWAS 2017

Christians and Jains: Together to foster practice of non-violence in families

Dear Jain Friends,

The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue sends you its warmest felicitations as you celebrate the 2615th Birth Anniversary of Tirthankar Vardhaman Mahavir on 9th April, this year. May this festive event bring happiness and peace in your hearts, families and communities!

Violence, with its many and varied forms, has become a major concern in most parts of the world. So, we wish to share with you on this occasion a reflection on how we, both Christians and Jains, can foster non-violence in families to nurture peace in society.

Causes of violence are as complex and diverse as its manifestations. Not so infrequently, violence stems from unhealthy upbringings and dangerous indoctrinations. Today, in the face of growing violence in society, it is necessary that families become effective schools of civilization and make every effort to nurture the value of non-violence.

Non-violence is the concrete application in one’s life of the golden rule: ‘Do to others as you would like others do unto you’. It entails that we respect and treat the other, including the ‘different other’, as a person endowed with inherent human dignity and inalienable rights. Avoidance of harm to anyone in any way is, therefore, a corollary to our way of being and living as humans.

Unfortunately, refusal by some to accept the ‘other’ in general and the ‘different other’ in particular, mostly due to fear, ignorance, mistrust or sense of superiority, has generated an atmosphere of widespread intolerance and violence. This situation can be overcome “by countering it with more love, with more goodness.” (Pope Benedict XVI, Angelus, 18 February, 2008).

This ‘more’ requires a grace from above, so also a place to cultivate love and goodness. Family is a prime place where a counter culture of peace and non-violence can find a fertile soil. It is here the children, led by the example of parents and elders, according to Pope Francis, “learn to communicate and to show concern for one another, and in which frictions and even conflicts have to be resolved not by force but by dialogue, respect, concern for the good of the other, mercy and forgiveness” (cf. Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, 2016, nos.90-130). Only with persons of non-violence as members, can families greatly contribute to making non-violence truly a way of life in the society.

Both our religions give primacy to a life of love and non-violence. Jesus taught his followers to love even their enemies (cf. Lk 6:27) and by His eminent example of life inspired them to do likewise. Thus, for us Christians, “non-violence is not merely a tactical behaviour but a person’s way of being” (Pope Benedict XVI, Angelus, 18 February, 2008) based on love and truth. ‘Ahimsa’ for you Jains is the sheet-anchor of your religion - ‘Ahimsa paramo dharmah’ (non-violence is the supreme virtue or religion).

As believers rooted in our own religious convictions and as persons with shared values and with the sense of co-responsibility for the human family, may we, joining other believers and people of good will, do all that we can, individually and collectively, to shape families into ‘nurseries’ of non-violence to build a humanity that cares for our common home and all its inhabitants!

Wish you all a happy feast of Mahavir Janma Kalyanak!

Jean-Louis Cardinal Tauran
